The Wolf Pack is back.
The East Kootenay Track and Field Club is back in action now that spring has sprung, competing in at two recent meets in Trail and Calgary.
Roughly 17 athletes from Cranbrook and Kimberley took to the field in Trail, with five qualifying for events at the B.C. Summer Games.
Not only did members of the club qualify for the Summer Games, but a few also broke some meet records.
"Jacob Sebben beat the old record by about seven metres in the javelin, and I beat the discus record," said club head coach James O'Kane.
"...We had five athletes qualify for the summer games, which was good for our Kootenay region, so it was a successful meet all around."
Samara Schiefner, Sarah Andreas, Emma Murtagh, Jacob Sebben and Justin Marsh all made the cut for the provincial summer games. Murtagh actually qualified for five events, with only a limit of participating in three, meaning she will be able to pick and choose based on her strengths.
"She had a really good meet," said O'Kane. "You can only do three events at the Summer Games and she qualified for five, so she's got her pick, and we'll figure out what's best for her to compete in and the best chance at medalling."
After the Trail meet, the club headed to Calgary this past weekend, as a smaller group of five athletes collected impressive results yet again.
-India Sherret had solid performances in five events, competing in the long and triple jumps, 100 and 200-metre dashes and the shot put.
-Becca Bermel ran a personal best in the 100-metre dash and also picked up a bronze medal in the women's open long jump.
-Justin Marsh won a silver medal in the javelin throw with a personal best of six metres, and also competed in the pentathlon—which scores points in 100 metre dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1,000 metre run—and finished fourth.
-Sarah Doll competed in javelin and discus, coming just shy of a personal best in the latter event.
-O'kane also got into the action, throwing for a bronze in the discus.
"Really proud of the kids there," said O'Kane. "Coming into that meet there, it really raises the level of competition—you're getting all the best from Alberta coming down to that meet, so it was an eye-opener as to what kind of talent is out there."
