The 2019 Shades of Green Ladies Curling Bonspiel is looking to make curlers from around the Kootenays believe.

The event, which will be held Feb. 22-24 will see female curlers of all skill levels compete at the Cranbrook Curling Centre.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to get together and to have some fun. It’s definitely people of all skill level, some are regular curlers and some occasionally participate in bonspiels,” said Kelly Epp, one of the organizers of the bonspiel.

The theme for this year’s bonspiel is “it’s only make believe.” Teams are encouraged to dress accordingly and have a chance to win additional prizes.

“Usually we try to have a theme. In the past, it has been shades of green, but this year we tried to expand it into something that wasn’t green oriented,” said Epp.

The theme, Epp explains is a good way to engage more people, and add to the fun that already happens at the bonspiel.

Team registration is $240 and teams will get to play in a minimum of three games, with dinner, entertainment, dance and a silent auction on Feb. 23.

On the Friday there will be snacks, Saturday and Sunday morning there will be muffins and fruit. Also, a hot soup lunch on Saturday.

As well, each team in the bonspiel will receive an entry into an elimination draw and a draw to the button.

Currently, there are 10 teams registered, but they hope to have more sign up.

“Hopefully 16 would be good, we are still looking for a few more teams,” said Epp.

Last year there were around 14 teams that participated in the event.

The first 12 teams are guaranteed entry with an early bird draw for teams who enter by Jan. 20.

“Enjoy yourself and support the local curlers. Have fun, there’s a dance and things like that,” said Epp. “It’s great entertainment to participate or to watch.”

Deadline to register for the bonspiel is Feb. 6. To register, contact Kim Dick at blueriver@shaw.ca or call/text 778-687-3003.
