It’s another important weekend of divisional games for the Kootenay Ice as they have a home and home series with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
The Ice head to Lethbridge on Friday, before coming back home to play host on Saturday.
Despite their lowly ranking in the Eastern Conference standings, the Hurricanes have beat the Ice twice in their last four meetings.
After building a 3-1 lead in the opening period during a game in January, the ‘Canes came back for a 5-4 win at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge.
“We’re certainly not going to forget that,” said Ice defenceman Landon Cross. “We’re going to go in there and we want to get even. We just got to worry about our own game when we go in there. We know their record and we just want to keep things going like we’ve been playing lately.”
Forward Zach McPhee agreed, noting that the team seemed to coast after getting the early lead.
“I think we just got comfortable that we had a lead and thought it would be easy for the next two periods,” McPhee said. We took our foot off the gas and and they came back. It was kind of one of those games where they just came back in and we didn’t have an answer.”
In December, the ‘Canes also got the best of the Ice in Cranbrook, coming back in the third period to post a win after forcing a shootout.
However, the boys have some swagger in their step, winning seven of their last eight games.
“I think it’s been our work ethic lately. We just got to compete with other teams and we just want to keep it rolling,” said Cross.
Lethbridge (11-39-2-3) has had a tough go this season, but they have won two of their last three games and also have some new bodies on the roster following the WHL trade deadline.
NOTES: Kootenay Ice captain Sam Reinhart, with a monster five-point night on Tuesday against the Blades, extended his point streak to 11 games. Zach Franko also has points in his last 3 games, while Jadeon Descheneau has a two-game streak going. Forward Ryan Chynoweth, who is upper-body day-to-day, is skating in practice with a yellow no-contact jersey.
