Dueck places second at World Cup race

After some frustrating results in downhill and slalom, Dueck finds the podium in super-G.

After frustrating results in downhill and giant slalom, Kimberley sit-skier Josh Dueck earned a second place finish in the super-G race at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Panorama this week.

Dueck did not finish in the downhill and giant slalom races, but finished 1:16:29 in the super-G, good enough for a podium finish on a course that got the best of many experienced skiers.

“Today is definitely a silver lining in a bit of a slow week for me, for sure,” said Dueck. “There have been a lot of factors in play this week and unfortunately, some got in my head. But I can learn from that and that was the goal today. Mentally, I wanted to let things just pass through, and obviously, it worked out.

“It wasn’t a great run, but it was a tough course for everybody, and so to finish second on the last day of the race series is rad.”

Dueck captured a silver medal at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympics and generated widespread media buzz in 2012, becoming the first sit-skier to complete a backflip.

Dueck will be heading to more World Cup races in Colorado next week, and is hoping to keep the momentum going from his results in Panorama.

“The confidence and momentum is building and it’s a really positive space to be in, so to be rewarded for it feels really good,” Dueck said.

“Sometimes you forget how much you enjoy doing well until you have a few races in a row where you don’t and you get a little bit down on it. But today is great.

“I took fewer chances than maybe I would’ve liked to, but at the same time, I did what I needed to do and carried my speed well.”
