Cranbrook Golf Club champs named

The Cranbrook Golf Club held its club championships on August 11 and 12.

The Cranbrook Golf Club crowned its new club champions on August 11 and 12.

The two-day accumulative tournament determined the 2012 champs for the ladies, men’s, junior and senior’s groups. There were also a number of fun skills competitions following the scheduled tournament.

Plenty of great moments were had over the weekend, but perhaps the most exciting was when ladies champ Leslie Weaver scored a hole-in-one and finished with a score of 164.

“Many golfers will play their whole lives without getting one so it’s pretty rare in a tournament,” said Kevin Foglund, association golf professional at the club.

Even after 36 holes, the overall ladies category had to be decided by a playoff between Weaver and second place finisher Mary Anne Bennett. Weaver clinched the win after knocking in a short par putt.

Another highlight was junior champ Joel Termuende, who tied the men’s overall champion Dave Stypula’s score of 139. Foglund said the 17-year-old has been playing at the club for years and is getting better and better.

“He was a pretty talented player back then but over the years he’s really come along,” he said.

Besides the top in each category, there was 92 total players out for the club championships from a total membership of 400. They went out on the course in three groups.

As the celebration moved into the evening, Foglund said they did the traditional mixed horse race competition and the winner of that event was Mark Dawson and Susan Langin. Second place went to Ken Stroud and Bennett.

“It’s a great weekend,” Foglund said.

While some take it seriously and head for the top of the leader board, Foglund said it isn’t all serious stuff at the club championships.

“The golf is only as serious as you want to make it,” he said. “At the end of it, a lot of people are just there to have a good weekend.”

The club championship comes on the heels of clean up from the July 20 windstorm that knocked over 173 trees total onto the course.

“The golf course recovered really well,” Foglund said. He credits the maintenance workers that brought the course back even better than before the storm. Over 80 volunteers also helped out in the clean-up.

The club championships are the latest in a busy schedule of tournaments at the Cranbrook Golf Club. Foglund said there is still a wind-up tournament to come and the annual Turkey Two-Ball on Thanksgiving.
