The Avalanche wrapped up their season last weekend as the men and women faced the Capilano University Blues and the Douglas College Royals in their final matches of the Pacwest schedule.
The men secured a berth in the playoffs after two tight matches with the Blues, but ran into a tough Royals squad that beat them twice.
On Thursday, the Avs took it all the way to five sets, battling back in the fourth to force the tiebreak. The Avs went up 25-23, before surrendering the following sets at 19-25 and 30-28. Facing a must-win set, the Avs got it done at 25-22 to force the fifth tiebreak.
However, Capilano pulled out the stops and took the final set at 15-10 to pick up the win.
Despite the setback, the men came out with a better result in the ensuing rematch on Friday. Capilano came out strong and won the first two sets at 25-23 and 25-15, before the Avs got rolling to take the next two at 25-23 and 27-25.
The Avs continued their strong play into the tiebreak, which they won at 15-6.
After battling the Blues, the Avs hit up the Royals, dropping a pair of matches against Douglas College.
The Avs took the first set on Saturday night at 25-19, but gave up the next three at 25-18, 25-20 and 27-25 for the loss. On Sunday, the Royals started strong, winning the opening two sets at 25-20 and 25-11 before the Avs responded by taking the third set at 25-23.
Douglas College then closed it out by earning the fourth set at 25-18 to pick up the win.
The men are in sixth place in the Pacwest conference, with UFV mathematically eliminated getting out of their six-point deficit to make it into playoffs.
Capilano will host the provincial championship next weekend.
The ladies had a tough weekend, facing the third-ranked Blues and falling in set scores of 3-1 and 3-0. The Avs took the opening set at 25-19, before Capilano roared back to win 25-17, 25-13 and 25-16.
On Friday, the Avs were blanked by the Blues at 25-15, 25-21 and 25-22.
Heading against the Douglas College Royals, the Avs took a set in each match, but still fell at set scores of 3-1.
On Saturday, the two teams traded the opening sets; Douglas winning the first at 25-15, before the Avs won at 25-22. The Royals then ran away with it at 25-21 and 25-17.
For their final game on Sunday, the Royals won the first two sets at 25-14 and 25-20 before the Avs answered back in the third with a 25-20 win. The Royals then sealed it up with a 25-22 score in the fourth to win the match.
