The Cranbrook Disc Golf Club had an incredible 2023, with record membership for their weekly league, numerous tournaments, players winning tournaments across the country and a new course installed at Moir Park, pictured here. Paul Rodgers file.

It was another banner year for disc golf in Cranbrook. The Cranbrook Disc Golf Club (CBKDGC) just launched a brand new “Disc News” newsletter sharing some of the highlights from the past year and looking ahead to the future.

This year the weekly CBKDGC league once again saw record participation. Hosted every Tuesday throughout late spring into early fall, the league drew as many as 45 people in a single night and had nearly 90 total registered members. Participants set an average after three league rounds and then battle to see who can score the lowest below their own average.

It all comes down to playoffs at the end of the season, with Luke Orth winning Pool A and Kevin Kerr winning Pool B.

The season will conclude with an annual general meeting at 12 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Idlewild Disc Golf Course, which will feature a discussion of the club’s great year, all the wins its members had throughout the season and a look at the plans for the future. There will also be an election for board member positions.

Following the meeting, CBKDGC president Steve Reedyk will host the annual Mando Madness tournament, which is free to play for members and will have prizes.

Some of the highlights from this year include local pro Casey Hanemayer winning an astonishing nine wins in the Mixed Pro Open division, including A-Tier wins at the BC Open, the Edmonton Open and the Canadian National Championships.

Ben Loggains secured three MPO wins including the massive Falcon’s Flight A-Tier in Alberta and Kristy Shiels took down six Female Pro Open (FPO) wins.

Adrian Reedyk won three tournaments in the MA1 division and at the Key City Throwback posted a two-round score of -18, tying Hanemayer, one of the country’s highest-rated players.

Throughout the career, in addition to growing its membership, the club built a new 10-hole disc golf course at Moir Park, made several upgrades to the Cranbrook Course at College of the Rockies and completed a layout change and installed several new short tee pads at Wycliffe.

This year, Wycliffe Disc Golf Course was ranked third best course in Canada on the UDisc App. Originally built in 2017, these new upgrades make this stunning and challenging course more accessible, safer and from initial reports even more fun to play.

“All of this year’s success wouldn’t have been possible without our volunteer army,” Reedyk said.

Although the official season is over and the days are growing shorter, there is still a lot of disc golf to be played before next spring. Coming up on November 11 at 6 p.m. is the second-annual Idlewild Eclipse, an MVP Disc Sports circuit Space Race event.

This follows a different scoring format than a conventional disc golf tournament. Rather than going for lowest score, competitors try to earn as many points as they can by hitting a hole in one for three points, the metal of the basket for two points, or the target area around the basket for one point.

Registration is available on dgscene.com and closes Oct. 22.

Glow season has officially kicked off and is currently being held at the College Course, but will move to Idlewild once the snow sets in. Head to the Cranbrook Disc Golf Club Facebook page for more details on that.

The club also hosts a putting league each winter, giving avid disc golfers the chance to get together and hone their skills before the snow melts again in the spring.
