This article has a very clear agenda. We know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "How can a musical called Urinetown be any good?" Yes, it is, in fact about the porcelain throne we all know so well, but that doesn't mean it can't be good. I mean, after all, think about how much you can relate: everybody uses the washroom. Really, we all do. So why not sing about it, huh? Why not sing about how it relates to our lives, and how it will affect our future? We are a society built on personal comfort, but just how sustainable can an arrangement like that be?
Urinetown: the Musical opens on May 8, and the cast is excited. It's been a long while since first reading, which was in January, and we're suddenly in the home stretch. Will we be ready? Is there enough time? Why did I listen to that man? The answers are, respectively: of course, there is never enough time, and that's a song title from the show. The point is that the cast is nervously eager to be doing the show. I mean it's not a secret to us that Cranbrook probably hasn't seen anything quite like Urinetown (is there anything like Urinetown?), and by that standard, we have no idea how they're going to respond. If we may, we'd like to offer you our own personal opinion: we think you'll love it. We think that it'll alter your perspective. We think that it'll be new, but art is always changing, and something odd can often work itself out to be something really damn cool.
The show runs from May 8 to May 11 at the Key City Theatre. Curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. for the first three nights, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for students and seniors, and $18 for the unlucky rest of you. It'll be a fun night for the whole family, or a fun night away from your cats. Urinetown: the Musical – honestly.
