LEONARD, William Joseph (Bill)

August 17, 1947 – Cranbrook, British Columbia

June 21, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Bill Leonard, brother, husband, dad and “poppa” on June 21,

2017 at the age of 69 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife and best friend Susan, his daughter Heather, his son Bruce and his wife Amanda and grandkids Maclean, Charlie and Addison. Bill is also survived by his brother Mike and wife Sue, Jean and Bob Cameron, Jim and Jacquie Estey, special nieces and nephews, and jamming partner cousin Rick Godderis and

his wife Joan.

Bill was predeceased by his parents Edward and Elizabeth Leonard and his in-laws Clarence and Virginia Estey.

What brought him the most joy were his three precious grandchildren Maclean, Charlie and Addison. Bill developed incredibly deep relationships with each of his grandchildren and understood what brought each of them joy. No activity was too big or small – hockey, fishing, Lego, reading, wrestling or just sitting on “Poppa’s” lap for some

cuddles. Bill was truly an incredible role model, friend and confidant to his grandchildren and his depth of character and lessons taught will be reflected in them for generations to come. Bill grew up in Cranbrook BC, attended Notre Dame University in Nelson BC and the University of

Calgary. During Bill’s 31 years with the Calgary Board of Education he impacted 1,000’s of Elementary School Children. Everyone remembers Mr. Leonard not only for his family fun nights and the annual pie throw in the principal’s face, but more importantly for the time he took to build meaningful relationships with students. These relationships were built on compassion and mutual respect. Upon retirement from the CBE Bill was employed by Compton Petroleum as Human Resources Manager. The most gratifying part of his roll at Compton was the

community outreach program that he developed which funded many schools and organizations in need. His happiest times were spent at the family cottage at Tie Lake, a place where family and friends have gathered for over 50 years. Bill spent his days at the lake puttering

and enriching the lives of those around him. Countless hours were spent driving the boat and teaching kids how to waterski, dirt bike and everything in between. While at the lake, Bill also cherished his time spent at Willow Bend golfing with his family and friends. The lake

will forever be a reflection of Bill and a cherished place for our family.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may

be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Bill had a great love of all sports and spent many hours watching Maclean and Charlie participate in different sports. He felt strongly that all kids should have the opportunity to experience the magic of sport and asked that any

donations be made to KidSport PO Box 94011 Elbow River Post Office, Calgary, Alberta T2S 0S4 Telephone (403)202-0251 kidsportcalgary.ca
