Ross Michael Whelan, “Mike”

1943 – 2016

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Mike Whelan announces his passing on Tuesday, May 24, 2016.

Mike was born on February 13, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario. At 8 years of age, Mike and his family moved to North

Vancouver, BC. Here, he met the love of his life Luella at a bowling alley, where they both were employed. After a 4 year courtship, Mike and Luella married on June 18, 1965. In 1967 they welcomed their son Brian and the year following

they welcomed their second son Jeffrey.

In 1975 Mike and Luella moved their young family to Cranbrook. Mike met Fred Graham who became a very close friend and introduced him to the community - something Mike never forgot. He was a proud member of the Cranbrook Kinsmen Club and K40. Mike worked for the federal

government for 26 years. He volunteered as a patient representative for the Canadian Immune Deficiencies Patient

Organization helping immune patients with subcutaneous treatments. In 2002 Mike received a certificate in Public

Management from the University of Victoria.

Mike is survived by his wife Luella, sons Brian and Jeffrey (Laura), sisters Adele and Claire, 8 grandchildren, and 5

great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father Ross Whelan, mother Yvonne Whelan and brother Patrick Whelan.

A memorial service for Mike was held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 10:00 am. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Mike may do so to the: East Kootenay Foundation for Health, c/o 13 - 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9.
