Ronald Mason McFarland
August 2, 1925 - July 3, 2017
It is with deepest sadness that the family of Ron McFarland
announces the passing of their wonderful husband, father,
grandfather on July 3, 2017 in Cranbrook.
Ron was born on August 2, 1925 in Big Valley, Alberta.
The family moved to Edmonton in 1928, where Ron and
his brother Doug were educated. In 1924 at age 17, Ron
answered the call of duty and served in the RCNVR during
World Ware II. On his return in 1946, Ron began his
memorable career in heavy duty construction equipment
sales and management. He owned and operated
McFarland Oilfield Construction Ltd. during the 1960s,
then moved on to manage the Alberta Roadbuilders and
Heavy Construction Association until he retired in 1992.
Family and friends were a huge part of Ron’s life. He loved
skiing, camping, fishing, golfing, hunting and curling
with family members and his many buddies. He was a
swimming instructor, Scout Master, community league
president, and member of the Kingsway and Southside
Legions in Edmonton. He sang in the McDougall United
Church choir for over 25 years, and with the Cranbrook
Barbershop group, Sun Valley Song and Christ Church
Anglican choir. One of the great enjoyments of Ron’s
retirement was the opportunity it afforded him to take up
painting again.
Ron’s sunny disposition, dimpled smile, kind caring way
with people, and his ever ready infectious laugh will be
greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 37 years Judy, and his
five children: Mick McFarland (Clare), Debra Empson-
Richardson (Jeff ), Kaley Wasylowich (Kim), Kimberley
McFarland (Tim), and David McFarland (Tanya). Grampa
will be greatly missed by Tara, Lea, Geoff , Chris, Callum,
Kori, Tanner, Delaney, Dallen, Darbi, Dania and Tealya.
We extend our most sincere gratitude to the many
people who provided outstanding and compassionate
care to Ron throughout his illness, as well as out endless
thanks to the staff at Joseph Creek Care Village and to Dr.
Caroline Shilhan.
A celebration of Ron’s life will be held Tuesday, July 11 at
10:30 am at the Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook. In
lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s honour can be made to
Christ Church Anglican Memorial Fund 46 - 13 Avenue,
S. Cranbrook, BC V1C 2V3.
