Richard (Dick), age 80, of Yahk, BC, died Sunday, February 21, 2021 peacefully at home. He was born November 7, 1940 in Cardston, Alberta to Ferdinand Richard (Dick Sr.) and Rhoda (May) Sommerfeldt. He grew up in the small community of Whiskey Gap and went to school at Jefferson, Alberta.
He played and loved sports, basketball in the winter playing center and softball in the summer as pitcher. He attended BYU where he met the love of his life. Dick was always active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many positions; home teacher, missionary in the Southwest Indian Mission, Branch President, Bishop, and High Councilman.
Returning from his mission he worked with family on the St. Eugene Reserve raising cattle, later moving to Yahk doing contract logging for Crestbrook, followed by logging and peeling posts on the old mill site. In 1989 he started BAR SE Trucking operating out of Cranbrook, retiring in 2014.
Family was of utmost importance to Dick and he dearly loved his wife and children. He labored hard to assure their welfare. He is survived by his wife Pauline, son Richard Toby, daughter, Deborah Kay and 3 grandchildren; siblings Daniel (Dan), Donald (Don), and sister Patricia (Patty) Tanner. A graveside service was held at Cardston Alberta, Friday February 26, 2021.
