It is with great sadness that we announce the very sudden passing of our dearly loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Marlene Kasner, on Saturday, August 30, 2014.

Marlene leaves behind her four beloved children, Don (Dagny) Kasner, Rod (Tracey) Kasner, Garry (Leslie) Kasner, and Karen (Kurt) Kenney; ten grandchildren, Kendall (Jeff), Danielle (Will), Jordan (Chelsea), Kirsten (Steve), Krystine (Brody), Lindsay (Brody), Jeremy, Mark, Nicole and Emmerson; and three great grandchildren, Meia, Eli and Keria.

Marlene was born on July 26, 1940 in Magrath, Alberta to John and Mary McArthur. The eldest of three siblings, Marlene spent her early years in Vancouver and moved to Coaldale, Alberta in 1956 where she married Calvin Kasner and raised their four children.

Marlene moved to Cranbrook upon her retirement in 2005 to be closer to her family and soon became a well known and much loved member of the community. Marlene was committed to volunteering and for many years served as the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary Membership Coordinator, in addition to volunteering at the Hospital Gift Shop and Auxiliary Thrift Store where she met many dear friends.

Marlene loved nothing more than to spend time with her family. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were first and foremost in her heart. Always active, Marlene also spent many enjoyable hours with her friends at the Cranbrook Curling Club; the ladies at Mission Hills Golf course; and with her friends in the community walking and hiking groups; where she developed many close relationships.

Marlene was an avid reader, had a passion for gardening and enjoyed travelling. She also loved the outdoors; whether it was snowmobiling, bike-riding, canoeing, fishing or snowshoeing, she was always up for fun. Her boundless energy and youthful spirit will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

An intimate family gathering will take place on Friday, September 5, 2014. The family also plans to have an open house in celebration of Marlene’s life; however, the date of which will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marlene’s name to the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary.
