Len passed peacefully after a short illness surrounded by his family. He will be sorely missed by his family, numerous friends, acquaintances and his Masonic Lodge brothers. There will be no service at his request. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Born on the family farm near Wiseton, Saskatchewan to parents Alvin and Lucienne Varty, Len eventually settled in BC where he spent a distinguished career working for Cominco in Trail and Kimberley. He was one of Cominco’s youngest General Foreman at age 27 and well respected for his ability to solve complex operational issues. He retired from Cominco in 1987.

Len was passionate about prospecting and mining for gold, achieving success where others failed. He always wore his latest best “bragging” nugget to show off and was always happiest in the outdoors mining, hunting, and cutting firewood, generally with his children in tow.

Len obtained his private pilot license at the age of 50 and combined flying with his love of golf. He enjoyed flying friends to challenge new golf courses through-out Western Canada and the US. After retirement, during winter Len often headed ‘down South’ on extended golf tours. He also enjoyed, gardening, the occasional game of curling and was a competitive chess player for many years.

Len was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge, going through the chairs to become Worshipful Master on 2 different occasions. In 2013 he was recognized for 50 years of service by the Order of the Masons.

Len was pre-deceased by his parents Alvin and Lucienne and his brother Don. He is survived by his wife Beverley, daughter Cynthia (John), sons Brian (Glynda), Dave (Sandi), Miles (Laura), his sisters Emma and Iris as well as 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild, whom he loved very much.

Donations in Len’s name can be made to CARE Canada or the Christian Children’s Foundation of Canada, both of which he supported for many years. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com.
