In loving memory ~
After a long life, well lived, Harry Killough passed away peacefully in his sleep early in the morning of December 9th, 2022. Harry was born at home in Thrums and lived practically his whole life in Castlegar.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Winnie Killough (nee McLeod), his brother Glen, 3 nephews and 2 nieces. Harry will be very much missed by his loving wife Lesley (nee Anderton), his sister Joyce (Mac and Jim both deceased), brothers Ted (Faythe), Rod (Dawn) and Terry (Eleanor) and many nephews, nieces and cousins plus his faithful dog Fjari.
Harry was a woodsman, a naturalist and a conservationist and above all a trail builder. Perhaps his greatest legacy for this area was the Merry Creek Trail System, which he planned and built in the nineteen eighties, and which is now much expanded. He also spent sixteen years working on the rail - trail between Castlegar and Christina Lake.
Harry had a prodigious memory and was a veritable mine of information concerning the history of Castlegar and of the Killough family. He loved to tell stories and self-published two books on his school days and prepared a large volume (not yet published) on the history of the Killough family in Castlegar.
Harry was also a scholar, who was equally good at arts and sciences and thoroughly enjoyed his time at Selkirk College, taking such varied courses as geology, cell biology and russian literature in translation. He was thrilled to be able to donate both a scholarship and a bursary for students of english.
Harry was a peace activist and enjoyed supporting the efforts of the Doukhobor people and the UNA. He also chaired the local watershed committee and served on the regional area planning committee. He also fought successfully with others to preserve the Brilliant School and the Doukhobor Suspension Bridge.
As Harry was a lifelong supporter of the Anglican Church in Castlegar, we will hold a memorial for him at St. David's church in May, when travelling is easier.
