George Erwin Meyer

April 22, 1942 – November 8, 2016

Our family is deeply saddened as an extra special person, George Erwin Meyer, completed his life’s journey on November 8, 2016.

George was born and raised in Lister, BC. He worked hard as a young boy to help his father clear their farmland and he assisted his grandfather with his orchard. His love of the land and trees were developed at an early age.

The outdoors was George’s playground. He loved exploring the wilderness and the environment of the Kootenays. Any outdoor activity was an adventure for George. The list was endless: hiking, trapping, hunting, canoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, camping, snowshoeing, biking and ATVing. There were not many paths and roads around Kimberley that George had not explored. His knowledge of the Kimberley back country was extensive.

He brought this knowledge and enthusiasm into his classroom. He taught in Kimberley for 30 years. His work with young people extended into Forest Wardens, Cubs, youth soccer, track and field and skiing.

George was a wonderful family man, a great friend, a good community volunteer, and the best Papa ever. Helping people was one of George’s gifts and he did so willingly and frequently. He was the person you called for a helping hand.

George was a member of the Kimberley Search and Rescue for many years and was quick to respond as need arose. He fought forest fires in the Kootenay region for 40 years and was the crew boss of many teams. He enjoyed and excelled as a canoeist. With his partners, he won various races and three silver medals in the BC Games. Landscaping was a favorite hobby of his and besides doing his own homes and his son’s, he helped others. His last endeavor was a waterfall in his backyard and his creation is spectacular. With his friends and son, he built a cabin in the White Swan area and spent countless hours enjoying this very special place.

He leaves behind his wife and loving partner of 50 years, Joan, his son John (Sue) and two grandchildren, Thomas and Michelle.

George was a real family man and loved his family dearly. He quietly supported all their interests and took pride in their accomplishments. His grandchildren and son were the loves of his life. Every step they took was a learning experience and led to boundless adventures and explorations.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.

Fly free, George.
