February 12, 2019
In the afternoon of February 12, 2019, our beloved mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, Ellen Augusta Vause, passed away; still spry, at the age of 99. Ellen was born in Consul, SK, the youngest of three, to Hans and Anne (nee Fletcher) Schmidt. She fell in love with and married a young man she had known from childhood, Russell Vause. The two moved their young family to Kimberley, BC in 1945, where they made many wonderful and life-long friends. Ellen became an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and for many years was the pianist for the Royal Purple Lodge. Curling was a winter pastime. She began a career she loved in ladies’ apparel with the Hudson Bay Company.
In 1964, Ellen and Russ began an 11-year adventure in the Northwest Territories, where they immersed themselves in the culture, nature, and community. In later years, Ellen enjoyed golf, trips to Reno and time with family. She was an avid sports fan, following every Calgary Flames’ game through her Centre Ice subscription.
She was predeceased by her husband Russell; son Wayne; grandson Greg Vause and brothers Robert and Warren Schmidt. Ellen leaves, to cherish her memory, her son Garry (Margaret) Vause; daughter, Beverley (Brian) Chlopan; grandchildren Brad Vause (Constance), Gayle (Grant) Smith, Jeff (Asako) Chlopan and special great-grandson, Kei Chlopan.
Ellen’s family would like to thank Dr. Van Zyl, the staff and residents of Garden View and the 3rd Floor nurses at East Kootenay Regional Hospital for their care and friendship.
A private family service was held for Ellen on February 17, and her ashes will be interred with her beloved husband and son in Consul, SK in the summer of 2019. In lieu of flowers, please take a moment and share an act of kindness with someone.
