A small wildfire south of Baynes Lake is being held, after RDEK South Country firefighters and BC Wildfire Service crews responded to the scene over the weekend.

A dozer completed a machine guard around the perimeter of the five-hectare fire, which broke out near the community of Kragmont on Saturday, according to the RDEK.

The blaze, located near Fitzpatrick Road and Highway 93, grew quickly due to heavy winds earlier in the day, generating a significant amount of smoke.

Initial response included 15 firefighters from the Jaffray, Baynes Lake and Elko Fire Departments along with nine apparatus. An initial attack crew from the BC Wildfire Service was also on site Saturday, returning with additional resources on Sunday.

It is suspected to be lightning caused.
