A renowned water expert will deliver a presentation at the College of the Rockies lecture theatre to mark UN World Water Day on Monday, March 11, starting at 7 p.m.

Robert Sanford holds the EPCOR Chair in Water and Climate Security at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health and co-authored UN Water in the World We Want report on post-2015 global sustainable development goals relating to water.

Additionally, he has authored, co-authored or edited over 30 books.

Sanford will be examining “what does water mean to you” within the context of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which includes a target to ensure availability and sustainable management of water for all by 2030.

His presentation will be simulcast to COTR campuses in Golden, Invermere and Fernie.

“We’re thrilled to have Mr. Sandford come to the College to speak on this very important topic,” said Katie Burles, College of the Rockies University Studies Arts and Sciences instructor. “Access to clean water is imperative for the health of all of us. Bob’s presentation is timely and will be of great interest to many.”

Along with his COTR lecture, Sandford will also speak to students at Mount Baker and Selkirk Secondary schools.

The East Kootenay Humanity Network is a group of local partners, supported by Cranbrook and District Restorative Justice, who work together to promote unity in diversity among the citizens of the East Kootenay, and to connect local residents with citizens of the world.

“Mr. Sandford will discuss how the current global water crisis came into existence and why it is important to Canada, and the world, to leave no one behind with respect to water,” added Amy Cross, East Kootenay Humanity Network. “He will also provide insight into how the East Kootenay region can establish and maintain respectful relationships with the environment, reduce inequality, and create partnerships as a vital step toward increasing the availability and sustainable management of water for everyone.”

Sandford’s presentation Water in the World We Want is offered free-of-charge, thanks in part to College of the Rockies’ Guest Lecture Fund. A book signing will follow.
