Two arrested for assaulting police officers

Man and woman arrested following early-morning checkstop on Dec. 4.

Cranbroook RCMP are requesting a Cranbrook couple be charged with assaulting two police officers after a traffic stop in the early morning hours of December 4th.

As a part of National Impaired Driving Week, Cranbrook RCMP were conducting a roadblock in the 1700 Block of 2nd St N at roughly 2 a.m.

A black Hyundai pulled up to the road block and when the driver’s window was down the police officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Both occupants were placed under arrest for Possession of a controlled substance.

One man took exception to being arrested and was belligerent to the police officer. When attempting to handcuff him, the man refused to listen to direction and then braced himself against the police car in an attempt to keep officers from handcuffing him. The man then spat on a police officer and was subsequently arrested.

After grabbing a police officer, a woman, the driver of the vehicle, is also facing charges.

Both face charges of assaulting a police officer and obstruction and will appear in court on February 14, 2017.
