Sam Steele Society named Sustainable Builder of the Year

Cranbrook city council named the Sam Steele Days Society as the Sustainable Community Builder of the Year Award for 2013

Cranbrook city council named the Sam Steele Days Society as the Sustainable Community Builder of the Year Award for 2013 during the May 12 council meeting.

"They are a very worthwhile recipient of this award," Mayor Wayne Stetski said. "With this award comes a grant for $500 through the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation.

Coun. Denise Pallesen congratulated the society.

“I think it’s an amazing organization and we received a number of nominations from different organizations and average citizens,” Pallesen said. “They’re known far and wide for the good things that they do throughout the entire year.”

Coun. Sharon Cross said she thought it was especially appropriate given that it’s the 50th celebration of Sam Steele Days this year.

“I’m really happy for them,” she said.

Coun. Diana J. Scott said Sam Steele Days is a sustainable community builder.

“It’s not just a party weekend, it’s not just where people play baseball or soccer and drink a lot of beer,” Scott said. “The event has grown astronomically since I arrived in 2000. It’s taken a life of its own. It is a meaningful weekend.”
