The Elk Valley Regional RCMP would like to remind residents and visitors that they are once again operating on Lake Koocanusa.

“Boat patrols, which are being supported by personnel from Elk Valley Regional RCMP and other RCMP Southeast District units, will be ongoing during various days of the week and holidays throughout the summer,” said Elk Valley Detachment Commandeer S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen.”Patrols will focus on enforcing impaired boating investigations, marine/boat safety checks and other police related activities impacting the lake area during our patrols. Our first day on the water was yesterday as a warm up for the upcoming weekend.”

Boaters are reminded that everyone who operates a power-driven pleasure craft must carry proof of competency on board – this includes a Operator Card and proof that you’ve passed a boating safety course in Canada. Further, boaters are reminded that drinking and driving, whether on land or water, is illegal and punishable under the Criminal Code of Canada and other provincial statutes. Please use your boat safely and within your and your boat’s limits – speed is just as much as factor in boating fatalities as it is on land.

Elk Valley Regional RCMP look forward to seeing you on the lake this summer, Nielsen said.
