Cranbrook will be just one of many communities across the province hosting the 27th Annual Parkinson SuperWalk on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the College of the Rockies athletic track.

Jen Siemens, the organizer for the local event, says the SuperWalk is the single, most important awareness and fundraising event for Parkinson Society British Columbia.

"Proceeds from the Walk help the Society provide critical programming and research to individuals and their families who live with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in BC including Cranbrook,” said Siemens. “I am hoping that people will consider signing up, which is free, then seek sponsorship from friends and family. Every dollar helps improve the quality of life for those living with PD."

The College of the Rockies track allows for all kinds of participation, from young children to those in wheelchairs. Save-On-Food has generously donated some snacks and refreshments for participants.

The SuperWalk will get started on Saturday, Sept. 10, with registration at 10 a.m. to be followed by hitting the track for an hour between 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Cranbrook walkers will be joined by other participants holding events in 20 communities across the province, as the cause has special meaning for Siemens.

“I’m doing this for my mother-in-law," she said. "She was diagnosed with PD three years ago – she means a lot to me and I am optimistic that the funds raised with the SuperWalk can have a direct positive impact on her and others living with, or affected by, PD in BC.”

According to Parkinson Society British Columbia, there are 13,300 in B.C. who live with the disease.
