The air was filled with wildfire smoke on Thursday night, but it didn’t keep families and youth away from the Spring Fling carnival.

More than one hundred people showed up for the opening night to get their share of thrills, games and delicious treats. The event runs May 19 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., May 20 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and May 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot beside Western Financial Place in Cranbrook.

The air quality index reached six in Cranbrook that evening — the highest it had been all week. Locals with lung and heart conditions were advised to stay indoors.

Riders turned out in droves despite the haze that lingered over the fair grounds. They were tossed and tumbled upside-down on a hair-raising ride called The Zipper, and twirled around and dropped on The Octopus, which had long snaking black metal arms.

Children shot targets with water guns and fished for treasure in a bid to win a giant teddy bear.

The Ferris Wheel was a popular attraction for families and thrill-seekers, and the city lights were still visible from the top of the ride.
