PHOTOS: Spirit of the Rockies brings community together

Wiener dog race, bocce tournament and arm wrestling drew crowd to festival

Balment Park was packed with people on Saturday June 17 for Spirit of the Rockies.

Meant 2B Loved Pet Rescue Society’s annual wiener dog race made a comeback. Little paws scampered across the pavement to the finish line as a crowd of spectators whooped and cheered. A long-haired wiener dog named Inca claimed the trophy for the second year in a row. In second place was a black and brown-haired pup named Dixie and in third, was the red shorthair Hunter.

Children enjoyed the bouncy slides and lined up at a booth to have custom balloon animals made. Families gathered in front of the main stage to watch the Polish Dancers perform a routine and the Kootenay Kings Arm Wrestling Club taught proper technique to curious passersby leading up to their competition.

Festival-goers teamed up to compete in a bocce tournament. Forty-eight teams look turns tossing weighted balls down a long track with the goal of being the closest to the target. Each groups had its own name and costume, and they cheered loudly whenever they blocked an opponent’s ball. Seven Balls Deep won the competition and Ball Bashers came in second.
