Phone scam affects Cranbrook residents

Calls that seem to come from the City of Cranbrook and offer a tropical vacation are a scam, RCMP says

RCMP are reporting that a new phone scam is hitting Cranbrook.

Residents have been receiving phone calls from a number that comes up on call display as the City of Cranbrook.

The caller asks the resident for credit card information so they can be entered into a contest to win a vacation to Mexico.

But the City of Cranbrook said it has no such contest and the calls are a scam.

"The City of Cranbrook is not able to remedy the use of their phone number by the anonymous source," said Cst. H.E.D. Pinfold of the Cranbrook detachment. "Therefore residents should be aware and exercise caution if any similar calls are received."

If anyone has any information on similar incidents, they can be reported to Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
