Barry Coulter

A new art event is coming soon to an alley near you.

The Back Alley Art Festival, a new event created by art students from Mount Baker Secondary School, is set for Saturday, May 28, at a space off the alley right behind the Cranbrook and District Arts Council gallery (1013 Baker St, Cranbrook).

Jessica Van Rhijn, one of the organizers, explains the event is organized by youth ages 15-25, and is sponsored by Columbia Basin Trust.

The Back Alley Arts Festival runs from 2 p.m. To 10 p.m.. A stage and viewing area is being set up behind the Arts Council which will host musicians, performance artists, kids' activities, and arts and crafts. Food and beverages will be available, and visual artworks by the art students of MBSS will be showing in the gallery itself.

Van Rhijn said the idea for the Back Alley Arts Festival came from Baker Art Teacher Cheryl Wilkinson and Photography Teacher Bonnie Hayes.
