Two local officials were awarded a prestigious medal commemorating the coronation of King Charles III, which recognizes their contributions to their communities, their province and their country.
Loree Duczek, the manager of communications with the Regional DIstrict of East Kootenay, as well as David Wilks, the Mayor of Sparwood, were presented with their medals by Kootenay-Columbia MP Rob Morrison, on behalf of the Crown, during a brief ceremony on Friday, Sept. 6.
In his prepared remarks, Morrison said Duczek has set the standard for effective emergency communications.
"She has navigated high pressure situations, ensuring that critical information flows seamlessly to the appropriate parties. Loree's ability to remain composed and make sound decisions has undoubtedly saved lives and mitigated the impact of disasters," Morrison said.
"This award recognizes her unwavering dedication, professionalism and tireless efforts at keeping communities informed and safe during the most challenging of circumstances."
After a career with the RCMP, Wilks continued his public service in retirement by serving as a Member of Parliament for Kootenay-Columbia as well as the Mayor of Sparwood.
"Today, as the Mayor of Sparwood, he continues to lead with unwavering commitment, working tirelessly to create a thriving and inclusive community for all," Morrison said. "His journey is a testament to the profound impact that one person can make through selfless service."
