High school and college students across the Kootenays recently showed off their abilities at a Skills BC regional skills competition hosted by the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook and Selkirk College in Nelson.

The Cranbrook portion of the event included welding, cabinet making, carpentry, while Nelson’s Selkirk campus hosted videography, 2D and 3D animation, graphic design, and photography events.

Fab-Rite Services Ltd. in Cranbrook assisted with the welding event, providing their shop, equipment and mentorship to the students, while the College’s carpentry program held the woodworking events under the guidance of Mark Knudsgaard, with support from Krister Leiman, Auxiliary Tool Crib Attendant Dave Skorzewski, Paul Knipe, and second-year carpentry student Jefferey Knievel.

The Regional Skills competition helps promote trades programs (and other programs), while enabling bragging rights through competition to give students a chance to show off their skills and get some recognition.

Results were tallied as winners were recognized for their respective events. Gold medallists are automatically eligible to continue on to provincials in Abbotsford on April 17th at the Tradex Centre. Provincial gold medallists can then move on to Nationals in Quebec in May.

Anyone winning nationals can represent Canada in Lyon, France in September.
