JCI members gather for 'The Climb'

National convention being held in Kimberley this weekend

The JCI Canada National Convention 'The Climb' is underway in Kimberley this week, running through the weekend at the Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre.

It is considered something of a coup for the Kootenay JCI chapter to host this conference, given that most are held in larger urban centres such as Edmonton and Toronto. But with Kimberley's new conference facility the national convention comes to the Kootenay for the first time. Conference attendees will be treated to all kinds of Kootenay-style activities, from golf to whitewater rafting, to horseback riding, hiking, biking on the Rails to Trails, orienteering and more.

It began with opening ceremonies at the Resort Plaza on Wednesday night. Thursday night, conventioneers travelled to the St. Eugene Resort for a Ktunaxa Cultural Night, sponsored by Teck. The evening included a traditional Ktunaxa drum group, traditional dancing and the telling of the Ktunaxa Creation Story. It also doubled as the JCI National Awards Night.

In addition to entertainment activities, there are daily workshops and training. Three speakers have been booked as well: Marty Park, Patrick Knight and Steve Podborski. There is an Oktoberfest evening at the Stemwinder on Friday night and a JCI President's Gala at the Conference Centre ballroom on Saturday night.
