Get set for elections before summer lull

Residents will go to the polls on Nov. 15 to put their vote in for what the future of Cranbrook will look like.

It may still be a few months away, but planning is already in the works for the upcoming municipal election.

Residents will go to the polls on Nov. 15 to put their vote in for what the future of Cranbrook will look like.

We may not know who is running and who is not, but we do now know when the candidates will get together to duke out the issues.

Alton Valler, from JCI Kootenay is co-chairing this year's All Candidate Forum. It is scheduled for the end of October and will be likely held in the Key City Theatre.

Valler wrote to council asking for a donation of the facility for the day of the forum, Oct. 29.

"ln the past the City of Cranbrook has donated a day at the Key City Theatre from your annual allotted allowance," he wrote. "We would appreciate your help once again in supporting this event and allowing JCI Kootenay to operate the ACF to benefit our electoral community at the Key City Theatre."

Valler noted that JCI Kootenay has hosted the event in the past and it's been a no-cost event for those in attendance.

"We have many volunteers from our organization that are willing to step up and contribute and excited once again to help in promoting the municipal election to a younger demographic as well as the rest of the community," he wrote.

JCI Kootenay also hosted the all candidates forum for the provincial election in May of 2013.

This upcoming election will also include a referendum question asking whether Cranbrook residents support the continued addition of fluoride to the municipal drinking water. If the majority is not in favour, the city will cease fluoridating the water. There will also be information campaigns coming out prior to the vote that will represent both the benefits and dangers that adding fluoride to drinking water can have.

Council will deliberate on the donation of the Key City Theatre venue in a future council meeting.
