Eight candidates running for vacant council seat

The nomination period has closed for candidates to run in the City of Cranbrook by-election set for Saturday October 21, 2017. In total, eight candidates have completed the nomination process, and they are as follows as listed on the ballot:

The nomination period has closed for candidates to run in the City of Cranbrook by-election set for Saturday October 21, 2017. In total, eight candidates have completed the nomination process, and they are as follows as listed on the ballot:

• Anna (Sam) Hudson

• Mike Peabody

• Lynn McIntosh

• William McKerrow

• Christy Wheeldon

• Mike Barr

• Jon McWhirter

• Gavin Thomas

General voting has been set for Saturday, Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort. Advance voting has been set for Wednesday, Oct. 11 and Wednesday, Oct. 18 at the Senior Centre (125 - 17th Avenue South).

The eight candidates are running in the byelection to replace former city councillor Tom Shypitka, who resigned to focus on his provincial legislative duties following his election as Kootenay East MLA.

Hudson and McIntosh ran in the last municipal election, while other candidates are running for the first time.

Resident electors may register on voting day at the polling station, if they meet these qualifications and provide two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not required, but the identification must prove both residency and identity.

Residents will be heading back to the polls in a year for the local government elections on Oct. 20, 2018.
