Don’t leave valuables in cars

In the spring Kimberley RCMP noted a spike in thefts from vehicles. The incidents were often in parking areas near popular hiking trails including Northstar Rails to Trails.

Police took a pro-active approach and in addition to increasing random patrols put notices on the parked vehicles advising them of the thefts.  The notices suggested owners remove valuables from sight and report anything suspicious to police.

The number of reported thefts decreased significantly.  But police want to ensure trail users remain vigilant.  The Northstar Rails to Trails Society recently partnered with the local RCMP and placed signs in a number of the parking areas as a reminder, not to leave valuables in your vehicle.

Although the police are out in the community actively patrolling areas, public education and awareness is often the key to curtaining criminal activity.
