Both the men and women’s Avalanche volleyball teams were feted at the College of the Rockies on Thursday, as both were recognized for their accomplishments at the Pacwest provincial championships last weekend.

For the first time in college history, both teams qualified for the tournament, with the men finishing fourth and the women capturing their first-ever gold medal.

The women, ranked sixth heading into the championship, steamrolled through the third and second-ranked teams to earn their berth into the final matchup against the Vancouver Island University Mariners.

The Avs struggled early, dropping two sets to their opponents before roaring back and winning the next two and the final tiebreaker.

Adriel Goodman, Ari Benwell and Kelsey Thompson were recognized as players of the game in three matches. Kennedy Koop, Alexa Koshman were given tournament all-star honours and Thompson was recognized with the tournament MVP award.

For the men, Patrick Toze, Julio Lins and Zach Fedechko were recognized as players of the game in their three matches, while Alex Cassels was named to the tournament all-star roster.

The women will be heading to Charlottetown, PEI for the national championships next week ranked fourth in the country.

A link to watch the Avs in action will be posted on their website.
