Tristen Chernove has completed his medal collection by capturing a gold in the C2 time trial at the Rio Paralympics on Wednesday morning.
Chernove, a paracyclist from Cranbrook, has already earned a silver and a bronze medal on the cycling track at the Rio velodrome competing in the 3,000-metre Individual Pursuit and the 1,000-metre Time Trial.
He finished his time trial at 27:43.16, beating Colin Lynch of Ireland by just over 20 seconds.
He still has one more chance to hit the podium again with another cycling event —the Men's Road Race — on Friday.
Chernove only recently began competing in competitive cycling last year, training out of the Burnaby velodrome and with Cycling Canada. He experienced his first taste of global competition in dramatic style, capturing two gold medals at the Para-cycling Track World Championships in Montichiari, Italy, earlier in March.
He is also a national Canadian champion, taking first place in the 50-kilometre road race, finishing with a time of 1:15.36, while also nabbing the the top spot in a 16-kilometre time trial event at 23:50.48.
He was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease in 2009, a degenerative condition that affects the body's nervous system. However, he hasn't let that affect his active lifestyle, and began training competitively in cycling as a way to slow the effects of CMT.
Chernove is the CEO and managing director of Elevate Airports, which manages the Canadian Rockies International Airport.
