Changes to land use a possibility

Changes may be coming to the use of Crown land as a result of messes like the one left at Koocanusa

Changes may be coming to the use of Crown land as a result of messes like the one left at Koocanusa after the Victoria Day long weekend, one city councillor predicts.

Coun. Bob Whetham said at the May 26 city council meeting that our provincial neighbour has already gone in that direction.

"Alberta has put in new regulations regarding the use of their Crown land," he said.

Whetham said, though it's been a tradition to be able to use Crown land without a fee, "that really depends on people being respectful of the land and being respectful of the people living nearby."

The subject will be discussed  at the upcoming Regional District of East Kootenay meeting on June 6.

Whetham said he wouldn't be at all surprised if B.C. is moving towards some kind of fee structure to pay for enforcement.

"Basically there were truckloads of material hauled out, and we only looked at one site," he said.
