Chance for input on family fun park Monday

There will be a chance for public input on the proposed go-kart and bumper boat fun park during the Monday Cranbrook council meeting.

There will be a chance for public input on the proposed go-kart and bumper boat fun park during the Monday council meeting.

At the June 10 meeting, council approved the second reading of a zoning amendment to allow for a family fun park on a property at 1000 Industrial Road No. 2.

The zoning amendment will add "Amusement Park" as a permitted use for the M-2 Light Industrial Zone, but only for that property.

Chris Hirn had originally planned to test out a go-kart business in the city, hoping to secure the Western Financial Place parking lot for the summer season. However, the rental fees and other concerns made Hirn reconsider.

Hirn was offered use of the Industrial Road property and has been pursuing that.

City staff said in the report that it does support the fun park use in general on the site, but some service departments have put out some recommendations that would need to be met. A building permit would be needed for construction of the bumper boat pool and would need to include a geotechnical report and engineering schedule.

Hirn would also need to obtain a permit for erosion and sediment control. The engineering department indicated that the proposed washrooms with holding tanks and sharing water from the neighbouring property are not permitted. The park would have to be connected to the city's water and sewer services.

The public hearing on the subject at the Monday, June 24 council meeting, at 6 p.m.
