Julia-Mary (JM) Lane, an Australian visiting Kimberley from Canmore, has been found deceased after being reported missing on Sunday.
Cpl. John Tent with the Kimberley RCMP detachment told the Kimberley Bulletin that she was reported missing on Sunday morning, but with no known location.
“Information from the public [indicated] that she may have been seen hiking on Bear Lake Trail,” Tent said. “Police went there first to verify if it was her vehicle or not and it was.”
Tent said that Kimberley RCMP as well as Southeast District Police Dog Services (PDS), a drone operator and Kimberley Search and Rescue were deployed to Bear Lake, a hiking area northeast of Cranbrook.
“Search and Rescue and PDS were on the way up the mountain when we got notified that these two hikers had located the female,” Tent said.
The RCMP are continuing to support the BC Coroner Sercice with their investigation and said the death is not considered to be suspicious.
“It’s a very sad situation and the RCMP send out their condolences to the family,” Tent said, adding Lane’s family has been notifed.
According to a social media post from Janet Hamilton, Lane’s housemate, she had come to Kimberley from Canmore with plans to hike most of the days.
