A brand new baby was welcomed at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital on Monday, May 15, 2017 and this one was a very large bundle of joy.

Shawn Tyson Williams Burgoyne weighed in at 13 pounds, 9.5 ounces reports Carl Hardt from IH Communications.

The Bulletin spoke with Mom Colleen Burgoyne on Wednesday. She is currently still in hospital and will be released in a few days.

Shawn is healthy and happy and eating a lot says Colleen.

“He was a C-section,” she said. “I was scheduled for May 18 but I was admitted on Sunday and they decided to go ahead on Monday.”

She knew she was having a big baby, but not this big, she says.

“I had an ultra-sound two weeks ago and they said he was around 12 pounds. But we didn’t believe it. We figured maybe 10 or 11 pounds.”

Almost 14 pounds was not what she was expecting at all, although her first son was large as well at 9 pounds, 12 ounces.

Asked if she thought she might have another even bigger baby in the future, Colleen laughed. “I think I’m good for now,” she said.

Both Mom and baby are doing fine and will be released in a few days. Colleen and family live in the Fairmont area.

Hardt says this is the biggest baby born at EKRH, at least as far back as anyone can remember, including one staff person who has been there 17 years.

The average birthrate in B.C. is closer to 7.5 pounds, ranging from 5.5 to 10 pounds.

Shawn may be the largest baby ever born in BC.

A family in Mission, B.C. gave birth to a 13 pound, 5 ounce baby in 2010.

The heaviest baby born healthy was in Italy in 1955, a whopping 22 pounds.
