Elk Valley RCMP arrested a man along Highway 3 near the Caithness Rest Area by Elko after receiving a report of a bare-chested man welding a handgun on the afternoon of June 6th.

Initial reports indicated a man with no shirt wearing shorts and one shoe was running in and out of traffic and holding what appeared to be a gun at roughly 1:50 p.m..

Officers responded quickly and came across a man walking near that location who matched the description and was identified by witnesses of the incident.

The suspect was arrested without incident.

A Police Dog Service team from Cranbrook attended to assist the Elk Valley officers with an article search, which resulted in successfully locating a loaded revolver and the man’s other matching shoe right next to the handgun.

The man was taken into the custody of the Elk Valley Regional RCMP, to be held for a bail hearing scheduled for June 7.

RCMP are looking to see if any other witnesses can provide information as to their observations of the incident and/or if anyone is in possession of any dash camera video that may have captured the event.

Anyone with information can contact the Elk Valley Regional RCMP at 250-425-6233 to speak with an officer or contact BC Crime Stoppers either online or by phone if they wish to remain anonymous. Please refer to file number 2025-1664.
