I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Child Care Facility Development project in Gyro Park. As a resident who lives adjacent to Gyro Park, I can attest firsthand to its constant use by the public, including the area earmarked for development.
The notion that Gyro Park is underutilized is, frankly, laughable.
It is crucial for our city to safeguard its green spaces because once they are lost, they are lost forever. The potential development threatens to irreversibly diminish an invaluable community asset.
Furthermore, I am deeply concerned that there was no public consultation regarding potential locations for this development, particularly given that it will be on my front doorstep.
While I understand my perspective may seem biased, I implore you to consider the broader implications of losing public green space in an increasingly urbanized area.
Gyro Park serves as a vital recreational hub for numerous families and schools in our community. I constantly see kids from the surrounding schools using the park for various activities including school activities during school hours.
Surely, there must be alternative locations that can accommodate this facility without sacrificing such a cherished public space.
For instance, the RV park near Baker Park has remained vacant for years and could potentially serve as an underutilized yet centrally located alternative. Exploring such options would demonstrate a commitment to balancing community needs while preserving our green spaces.
I urge the Mayor and City Council to recognize the immense value of protecting Gyro Park and to reconsider the proposed development.
I hope city council and perhaps the school district can choose and more suitable location without sacrificing Gyro Park.
