The Southeast Fire Centre is assessing a new fire start in Top of the World Park, east of Kimberley, near Mt. Morro and another east of Moyie
The Mt. Morro fire, believed to caused by dry lightning was at 40 hectares at last assessment.
Early on July 17, an initial attack crew, response officer and helicopter were sent out to assess the location, size, and behaviour of fire N21014. Based on the extremely steep, inaccessible terrain and aggressive fire behaviour, BCWS is currently employing a modified response type and is working with BC Parks to identify strategies and tactics that align with the local wildfire response plan.
A spokesperson for SEFC said that modified response is when a wildfire is managed using a combination of suppression techniques, including direct and indirect attack as well as monitoring to steer, contain or otherwise manage fire activity.
SEFC is also reporting another new start on July 17, at Sunrise Creek, east of Moyie. The fire is currently less than a hectare but listed as out of control.
Category 1 campfires, Category 2 and Category 3 open burning, as defined in the Wildfire Regulation, are prohibited across the entire Southeast Fire Centre.
