Former BC United candidate for Columbia River Revelstoke, Scott McInnis, has announced he will run as a Conservative.
McInnis made the announcement over the Labour Day weekend in a FaceBook Live post.
He said the past five days since the announcement have been interesting, and he is encouraged by the continuing support.
He’s done some soul searching, he says, about why he was in this in the first place.
“Three things are non-negotiable,” he said. “One, my overwhelming priority is to serve the people of Columbia River-Revelstoke. I know good leadership is important.”
Secondly, he says, while goal posts can change in politics, he needs to stay true to himself, no matter the political storms around him.
“Third, we must defeat the NDP. This election is very important. We can’t afford another four years with the NDP.”
HIs choices he says, were to call it quits, run independently or wait for a call from the Conservative Party of BC.
He says he has spoken with Conservative leader John Rustad a couple of times since the BC United announcement and he had some pointed questions.
“A couple of things emerged,” McInnis said. “All the candidates are in this first and foremost to serve their constituents.”
Secondly, he says, voices and different perspectives are welcome and encouraged.
“So I accepted the Conservative candidacy,” he said. “i thought hard on it and feel a sense of relief. We have a really special chance to defeat the NDP.”
He says now rather than fighting a war on two fronts the only focus can be on defeating the NDP.
