It has been a great start to winter, and residents of the South Rockies, East Kootenay and Elk Valley have been getting after it.
The Mountain Adventure Skills Training (MAST) students are too. They are gearing up for the snow-filled adventures that define the heart of the curriculum. Following an eventful fall season filled with intensive fieldwork and hands-on learning, the group has transitioned from the trails and cliffs to snowy peaks..
The program kicked off with weeks in the field, providing students with invaluable real-world experiences in various outdoor disciplines. Highlights included a challenging week of backpacking through rugged terrain, an immersive week of rock climbing on natural walls, and a mountaineering segment that pushed technical and mental limits. Adding to these adventures, students honed their wilderness survival skills, learning to adapt and thrive in nature’s unpredictability.
As the season shifted, so too did the program’s focus. Over the past month, students turned their attention to mastering risk management strategies, delving into the nuances of the outdoor adventure industry and earning first aid certifications. These lessons are critical for preparing participants not only to explore the backcountry but also to navigate the responsibilities of leadership in outdoor environments.
With snow now covering the peaks, the group is has already begun their journey into avalanche skills training. These avalanche skills modules will provide them with essential knowledge and hands-on experience in following a daily process, assessing terrain, making decisions and performing companion rescue. These skills are vital as they prepare to venture deeper into the backcountry for winter adventures.
The MAST program is more than just an outdoor training course — it’s a journey of growth, resilience, and preparation for careers in the adventure industry. Students are not only developing technical expertise but also cultivating a profound connection with the wilderness and the skills to share it responsibly with others.
