On a recent visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Cranbrook (BGC), the local Lions Club brought along the big cheque to symbolize their financial support for the non-profit and the families they serve.
BCG is a long-standing member of the Cranbrook community. Starting in 1970, they provide services to children from infant to age 18. In the Infant-Toddler Daycare program they accommodate up to 12 youngsters, up to 3-years-old. This program is run with three professionally qualified staff.
The Building Blocks program for kids aged 3 to 5 can take up to 24 young folks, and works on a “learning through play” approach. Shifting between indoor and outdoor activities, the staff assist these children to develop social skills, learn new skills and to develop physically.
For children between 5 and 11, BCG runs the Kootenay Street Clubhouse, for children each day after school and during non-instructional days when school is not in session. Kids are divided into two groups, ages 5 to 7 and ages 7 to 11. They take as many as 44 kids into the program and has them involved in sports and recreation, creative arts, literacy, health and nutrition and personal growth.
Students in Grades 6 to 12 can partake in the BCG Youth Impact program. This drop-in center provides and alcohol-free and drug-free space to participate with others in a wide range of activities. Anything from mini-golf to rock climbing to cross-country skiing to hiking might be on the outdoor list. Whereas, lessons in cooking healthy meals, resume writing, and job training may also be available.
