From June 3 to June 13, the Cranbrook and District Arts Council Gallery will be hosting an exciting new exhibition titled Homespun, by multimedia artist Nadine Stefan.
Nadine addresses the idea of “home” in this exhibit while referring to a place, either physically, emotionally or mentally, that brings a sense of security, comfort and well-being.
This exhibit features installations that incorporate second-hand clothing, bed sheets given to her from family and friends, and underbrush that was gathered on her favourite walking paths.
She has used these items in a number of ways, such as collaging drawings of feet and hands into the sheets, staging photos and pinning together items that resemble blankets.
She uses clothesline to hang her installations because they are still a common sight in the Kootenay area.
Nadine comments, “It has been a little like metaphorically hanging your emotions and thoughts out on a clothesline. I admit that it was a bit uncomfortable to put my deepest feelings out in public… as moments of my life are at risk of being exposed. What attracted me to this metaphor was how similar this creative process has been to the act of hanging laundry out to dry…to wave in the wind for all to see. What got revealed to me, by way of insight, was how much a part of cultivating that sense of home, for me, was in feeling that freedom to let your vulnerabilities show. This series is a testament to life, love and community – the inter-weavings of what we call home that profoundly affect both body and spirit.”
The opening reception for Homespun is on Thursday, June 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the gallery. Wine will be available.

The CDAC gallery is located at 135 – 10th Avenue South, Cranbrook. Gallery hours of operation are Tuesdays to Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
