Christmas candy car thief caught in Victoria

Man in his 30s faces theft, mischief charges in Dec. 11 incident

A man in his 30s is facing theft and mischief charges after candy, clothing and electronics were taken from a parked truck in the 1100-block of View St. on Dec. 11.

A witness called Victoria police after watching a man climb through the truck's canopy window. When the man exited the vehicle, police pounced on him.

The suspect was on probation and was allegedly breaching several conditions of his release that include not being in any parking lots of parkades, said Const. Mike Russell.

“VicPD is especially appreciative of the member of the (citizen) who called this in,” said Mark MacIntyre, Director of Crime Prevention Services. “This arrest occurred as a result of a citizen taking the time to report something that just didn’t look right.”

Recommended charges include three counts of failing to comply with a probation order, possession of property obtained by a crime, theft under $5000 and mischief under $5000.
