Learn some basics about gardening in the East Kootenay next week during the second of three summer workshops in the One World Garden series.
The workshops are designed to suit newcomers to Canada, but anyone who wants to learn more about growing produce or who has wisdom to impart will appreciate the classes.
"As with the last set, we will be enlisting local garden mentors to help share their knowledge and experience with those newer to gardening and new to the area," said coordinator Shannon Duncan.
"We'll be building on the success of the first set, and having a good time in the garden while learning."
The next workshop is called "Feed The Growth" and it focuses on tomato care, organic fertilizers, and pest control.
The first session in June was on how to create a garden bed and container gardens and plant potatoes. The third session in August will be on berry and root vegetable harvesting and care.
The workshops have been made possible through the Welcoming Communities project, funded by the provincial and federal governments. Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Cranbrook Food Action Committee and Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook have teamed up to offer the free workshops to connect newcomers and beginning gardeners with local knowledge, resources and the experience they need to grow their own food here.
The "Feed The Growth" workshop will be on Tuesday, July 9 at the Cominco Community Garden in Kimberley from 6 to 8 p.m. To register, email shannon@wildsight.ca or phone 250-427-2535 ext. 223.
