“Cranbrook has more historic houses than they’d ever realized” was a common theme echoed by several participants who took part in a Heritage Walking tour of the Baker Hill area sponsored by the Cranbrook History Centre, May 6.
The area extends for several blocks south of Rotary Park and is home to many two and three-storey, ornate, wooden houses constructed by prominent Cranbrook families from the early 1900s to just before World War I. Many of the houses are still in good shape and several have been restored echoing their old glory.
Seven local residents and one from Fort Steele took part in the event and were treated to a guided tour by Don and Linda Miller of their restored home on 12th Avenue South.
Tammy Morgan and Dave Humphrey, from the Cranbrook History Centre, organized the tour and local history buff Gerry Warner guided the two-hour walk through history.
As far as future tours go, the Cranbrook History Centre plans on making the Baker Hill Heritage Walking Tour an annual event.
