The East Kootenay Volleyball Club U15 girls Avalanche team recently completed a highly successful season, capping it off at the Canadian National Championships from May 20 to 22 in Regina.

After a challenging season against Alberta’s best U15 teams — they finished as high as fifth place in one of the Alberta premiere tournaments and won the Cranbrook Rich Waylen Tournament — the girls won a Silver medal in Tier 2 Division 1 at the big show.

In the preliminary round of the tournament, the Avalanche beat Saskatchewan’s Weyburn Rush 2-1 (25-6, 9-25, 15-11), lost to Alberta’s Dinos 2-0 (9-25, 23-25), and then beat Manitoba’s Selkirk Royals 2-0 (27-25, 27-25).

In the subsequent Power Pool round, the Avs were defeated 2-0 (17-25, 17-25) by Manitoba’s Junior Bison Gold team, lost 2-0 (16-25, 22-25) to the Dawson Creek Volleyball Club Dynamite, and then finally beat Saskatchewan’s Oxbow BKVC 2-0 (25-22, 2-22).

In the playoffs, the Avs beat Alberta’s Pandas 2-0 (25-20, 25-22) and then the NOOKS Blue team 2-1 (20-25, 25-21, 15-12) in the semi-finals.

They ultimately lost, however, to the Selkirk Royals in a rematch of their preliminary showdown, 2-0 (18-25, 13-25) and had to settle for second best in Tier 2.

The team’s 2017 roster was made up of nine girls: Jane Beswick, Belle Boehm, Aspen Cooper, Jamie Dennis, Taylor Drake, Claire Newsome, Ellie Oestreich, Samantha Robertson and Malia Samycia. They were coach by Allana Oestreich and Cheri Cooper.
